Educational Adventures are thrilled to share highlights from a recent Marine Biology trip to Cairns by an inbound school group visiting from New Zealand. We’re incredibly fortunate in Australia to have such unique ecosystems, and what better way to celebrate them than by introducing their wonders to our neighbours across the water?

Fitzroy Island: Biology and Reef Education in Action

After a day of travel and rest, day two kicked off with a ferry ride to Fitzroy Island for the Biology Reef Educational Program. Though the seas were rough, spirits remained high as students arrived at the island. There, they explored the Turtle Rehabilitation Centre, where they learned firsthand about the impacts of human activity on marine life. A glass-bottom boat tour offered a unique perspective on the reef's vibrant underwater world, with discussions centred around coral bleaching and reef recovery. After lunch, students snorkelled with turtles in the crystal-clear water and hiked through tropical rainforest to stunning Nudee Beach - a truly unforgettable day.

Outer Barrier Reef: Reef Magic and Citizen Science

Day three took students to the outer reef with Reef Magic, where a floating pontoon provided a base for a full day of marine exploration. From snorkelling with turtles and reef sharks to participating in reef restoration activities and collecting data for a citizen science fish survey, the day combined fun with meaningful scientific engagement.

“Highlights included spotting turtles and reef sharks, participating in reef restoration activities, and contributing to citizen science with a fish survey.”

Rainforest, Ziplining, and a Cassowary Sighting

The Daintree Rainforest provided a gorgeous setting for their fourth day - an adventure packed with natural wonders. Students zip-lined through ancient rainforest canopy, spotted a rare cassowary, and took a river cruise where a saltwater crocodile made a memorable appearance. The day was a vivid reminder of how the rainforest and reef are intertwined, both ecologically and culturally.

Culture, Wildlife, and Army Ducks

On their final full day, the group took the Scenic Railway from Cairns to Kuranda, winding through lush mountain rainforest. The day’s destination was Rainforestation Nature Park, where students enjoyed a wildlife encounter, a ride on an amphibious Army Duck, and a powerful cultural experience at the Pamagirri Aboriginal Experience. Traditional dances brought the crowd to life, especially with two student volunteers joining in with impressive moves.

Saying Goodbye (With a Sprint and a Cyclone)

The final day offered some well-earned downtime with a relaxed morning in Cairns city centre. Students enjoyed the esplanade, last-minute shopping, and one final group lunch before heading to the airport. A few travel curveballs, a delayed flight, a tropical cyclone near Auckland, and a nail-biting connection in Brisbane, couldn’t dampen the group’s enthusiasm. The trip ended just as it began: with laughter, teamwork, and a shared sense of adventure.

“Despite a turbulent descent into Auckland, spirits remained high and everyone arrived home safely.”

This was more than a school trip, it was a deep dive into Australia’s most remarkable ecosystems, a celebration of cultural heritage, and a reminder of the value of curiosity and connection. A massive thank you to the students and staff who made it all possible!
